The name of the group originates from a word in More language (spoken by Mossi, a ethnic group living in central Burkina Faso). Lafi means health as well as peace. The word is a part of a greeting among Mossi. Lafi is both a dance and musical group, so the main focus of the group is that dance and music are not two seperate entities but equal and codependant parts of a performance. The instruments played are mainly percussions, which are sometimes also acompanied by a flute, a kora and singing. The music is based on traditional west african rythms into which the musicians are trying to incorporate their own original creations and styles. The dance is a combination of predominantly african dance with some contemporary features. The group is, in the most humble sense, trying to stay true to the african heritage of a musician and a dancer relating to and comunicating with each other and therefore creating an undescribable moment when they become one.
